This event has been set up to ask for your support in helping me achieve my 2018 London Marathon fundraising target (although if anyone can make it down it on the big day then that would be amazing). Please read my story and if you can donate anything at all to a very worthy cause then it would be hugely appreciated..
In August 2015 I decided to download a little app called “Couch to 5k” to give it a try- this was a totally new direction for me as I had avoided exercise for most of my life, dreading PE at school and spending a good three decades partying hard in numerous nightclubs. So I popped on an old pair of Adidas Samba and started the course… The first few sessions were pretty easy but I soon found the going tough as the time spent running non-stop increased and the walking breaks dwindled. However, I stuck it out and joined a local (and very approachable) running club – Start2jog – to give me the incentive to carry on. Soon I had purchased my first pair of “proper” running shoes (£30 from eBay) , completed my first 5km Parkrun in my local park and in March of last year I got my first bit of running bling after entering my first official 10km.
I then went on to run the Greater Manchester Half Marathon in October last year and the Greater Manchester Marathon in April 2017 raising funds for the wonderful Christie hospital – your amazing generosity helped me raise a grand total of nearly £2500 and though my mum passed away last October I know she would have been proud of the fact this lazy old sod ran such a bloody long distance for such a good cause!!!
So what next? Well, some of you may be aware that my big brother Frank was diagnosed with a rare monocytic leukaemia last year, undergoing many sessions of intensive chemotherapy. It turned out after being tested that I was a positive match for a stem cell transplant, but we unfortunately found out it was not a suitable option given my brother’s particular case and he was given a very limited life expectancy.
My brother loved to run before his illness and I wanted my next big race to be in honour of him so I therefore decided to see if I could bag a coveted place in what is arguably one of the most famous running events in the UK, if not the world – THE LONDON MARATHON.
I was aware of the work of a fantastic charity called Anthony Nolan who specialise in helping those with blood cancers like my brother. They started out way back in 1974… With her three-year-old son Anthony in urgent need of a bone marrow transplant, Shirley Nolan set up the world’s first register to match donors with people in desperate need. They now help three people each and every day find that lifesaving match. They also conduct world-class research into stem cell matching and transplants, so they can make sure every person in need gets the best possible treatment.
I contacted Anthony Nolan with a request to run the 2018 London Marathon as part of their fundraising team and yesterday I got the amazing news that out of over 2000 applicants for just 215 places on their team I had been accepted! So this is it, Adrian Luvdup – notorious nocturnal 90s party animal – is running the 2018 VIRGIN MONEY LONDON MARATHON! I’ve now got 11 months of longer and longer practice runs, eye-watering chafing, excruciating cramps, agonisingly aching muscles and much more to look forward to… But it’ll be worth it all when I find myself at that starting line on 22nd April 2018.
I have a target I’m aiming for and I really hope that over the coming weeks and months you might be able to donate a small amount – I have over 600 friends on Facebook and if all of you only donated just £5 each I would absolutely smash my target and then some! Of course I’d be very surprised if every single person on my Facebook friends list managed to donate so please, please, please donate all you can and I will be eternally grateful.
When I reach the half way point to my fundraising target I’ve decided the best way to celebrate will be with a fantastic boat party to celebrate my 50th year on this wonderful planet – all profits from tickets sold for the party will of course go towards raising more money for my chosen charity. I’m in semi-retirement as a DJ these days but this is undoubtedly the best excuse I can think of to fire up the turntables once more and sail the waves again in the company of the splendid Mr Paul Hughes, some surprise special guests and my lovely, lovely friends. My 50th birthday is in November so I would love to have the party around that time if possible but I’m determined to reach the half-way point to my fundraising target first!
I hope you’ll understand what a HUGE deal this is to me – running the 2018 Virgin Money London Marathon in honour of my big brother for a very special and personal cause – and support me on my endeavour… I obviously don’t expect you all to be there in London on the day cheering me on but a little donation and a few words of encouragement will mean the world to me xxx
